The fourth book of Moses deals primarily with the people of Israel wandering through the desert. It describes their preparations, and the 40 years during which God caused Moses to lead his people through the desert and to the promised land once all who had been stubborn and unbelieving died out. The paintings show the creation of a new people, a new generation that would eventually in-herit the land of Canaan. But Numbers also shows the expulsion and extermination of the old inhabitants, as well as the descendants of Moses, who were not themselves allowed to enter the land.
